440 miles + price under $100k

This week, Chevrolet said that production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition is now underway. It offers more range and payload than previously announced, but is it enough? And is the price too high?

2024 Chevy Silverado EV range

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is an all-electric truck (yes, I made that name up). The truck's rated mileage starts at 393 for the 3WT and goes up to 450 for the 4WT. So, even the base range is far ahead of all other electric trucks currently on sale.

To compare, rates plural The range of other electric trucks is as follows:

  • Ford F-150 Lightning: 320 miles
  • Tesla Cybertruck: 340 miles
  • GMC Hummer: 381 miles
  • Rivian R1T: 410 miles

The RST will get a range of 440 km, which is still 30 km more than the R1T.

But this raises the question: Is it enough? When towing or cold, the mileage can drop to 50% of the expected range, which would take the actual distance to somewhere in the 220 mile range. That means on a road trip, you'll have to stop every 3 hours or so to charge. For us, that's definitely better than stopping every 1 to 2 hours, which we experienced with F-150 Lightning in the cold.

Details of RST Final Edition

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST Final Edition is one of those rare cars that actually delivers more than what was originally promised. This electric truck will deliver 10,000 pounds of maximum towing and 1,500 pounds of maximum payload – although if you use these truck capabilities, your range will be affected. We just don't know how much yet.

In Wide Open Watts mode, the truck will deliver up to 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. But using this feature will also cost you a lot.

The RST Final Edition is a fully loaded model, and will include the following features:

  • Four-wheel steering
  • Automatic air suspension
  • Multi-Flex Midgate
  • A Multi-Flex Tailgate with power release is available
  • 17-inch large infotainment screen, 11-inch instrument cluster and multi-color driver display
  • Super Cruise with trailering

What it won't have: Apple CarPlay. Since General Motors has ended CarPlay on its EVsdon't expect this popular display phone software on the Silverado EV in any trim.

2024 Chevy Silverado EV prices

We saw the release of the base WT trim in 2023, kind of, with 443 electric trucks for sale in the fourth quarter of 2023. Now, the top-of-the-line RST First Edition models enter the lineup at Factory Zero. And Chevy is looking to add 1,061 sales from the first quarter this year with the addition of this new program.

So, we now have the following options available, with prices including an $1,895 destination charge:

  • 3WT: $74,800
  • 4WT: $79,800
  • RST First Edition: $96,395

While Chevrolet failed to deliver on its promised $40k base price, at least it managed to drop the top price below $100k. In comparison, some electric trucks are priced like this:

  • Tesla Cybertruck: $60,990-$99,990
  • Ford F-150 Lightning: $65,090-$87,090
  • Rivian R1T: $69,900-$89,000
  • GMC Hummer: $98,845-$150,295

Back to the idea of being the greatest. If you look at the 4WT trim at $79,800 it gets 450 miles of range – that's the lowest price for the best range of all electric trucks.

An important point

Traditional truck owners still have trouble wrapping their minds around an electric truck. At full range, loss of draw distance and charging problems at the top of the list of reasons why don't they change. The 440-450 mile range for the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is a step in the right direction, but until the infrastructure wakes up snuff, may not be enough. Especially considering you'll spend over $70k for a base truck to get that range.

We'd love to hear what you think. Sound off below in the comments.
