Our choice

This nylon handle bag balances simplicity with thoughtful carrying features. It has room to hold essentials with well-placed pockets to keep everything organized and accessible while riding. It's hard to handle the bike, though.

The Ornot Handlebar Bag is a lightweight tube-shaped bag, made from recycled nylon, that makes accessing your gear quick and easy. This 3.1-liter handle bag can carry three large burritos as well as bike tools, phone, light jacket, wallet, and keys. This bag improves on our previous (and now runner-up) pick, the Road Runner Bags California Burrito, by adding four easy-access and secure exterior pockets made of stretch mesh, and an interior zipper pocket to keep your wallet safe and secure.

Two external pockets sit on the back of the bag, facing you when you're on your bike; the third part sits on the right side and has an elastic cord to secure the smartphone in place, and the last pocket falls on the front of the bag. That front pocket is the perfect place to stash a light jacket for quick access as the weather changes, while you're at a standstill, for example. The zipper closure of the main compartment folds over the top of the bag and then to the side, making it a much more accessible space than our runner-up. This design choice makes a big difference when you fill the bag, and as a result the bag appears larger than it is.

The main drawback we found is that Ornot doesn't include (or sell separately) a strap to convert it into a shoulder bag when you get off the bike, so you'll have to grab your own. In addition, the bag only comes in three colors, and the mesh pockets on the outside may tear if you tend to carry hard, sharp objects in them.

Runner up

Road Runner Bags California Burrito 20231116 231110 full

Spacious without taking up too much real estate on your handles, this Cordura-nylon bag is light, easy to use, and can hold all your essentials. It's more expensive than our top pick, though, and has a few extra pockets.

The Road Runner Bags California Burrito is simply designed to be functional, stylish, and durable all at the same time. This 3.3-liter, tube-shaped bag, which is about the size of a six-pack, holds as much as our top pick, although it lacks the external pockets that we like in the Ornot bag.

This bag has a single zipper that is easy to operate while on your bike and side pockets for small items you may want to access quickly, although it does not fold the bag like the zipper on the Ornot bag. Made from durable Cordura nylon, it comes in eight fun colors to match your bike, in addition to our top picks. The California Burrito also easily converts to a shoulder bag with the Road Runner shoulder strap (sold separately for $17).

Choosing a budget

Chrome Helix Handlebar Bag 20220728 142350 full

Sleek and low-profile, this polyester-combined handle bag is the perfect size to take with you all day. Its grip system could be better, though.

The Chrome Helix Handlebar Bag is sleek enough to take with you anywhere, but in our testing we found that its Velcro harness attachment system didn't work as well on our bike as the buckets on our top picks and top picks. While some people may be reluctant to buy a $65 bag that's considered a “budget pick,” we've decided that the $50 to $60 range is the thinnest one can expect to spend on a bag that's still sturdy enough to not jump in the machine. handles.

This 3 liter rectangular bag is the size of two take out containers (white collapsible box type). Accessing things while on the bike is easy as the lid opens towards you; while that feature is not unique, it is not common to all handbags. The Helix has no external pockets but has two internal mesh pockets. It is made of durable and water-resistant polyester material that is strong and durable enough to keep its shape even when empty. The sling strap of this bag makes it easy to travel on a bike.

Improve the selection

Swift Industries Catalyst Pack 20220728 142936 full

Constructed from recycled canvas and nylon, the Catalyst is a high-capacity and solidly built bag that works well on or off the bike. It is very expensive, however.

The Swift Industries Catalyst Pack is the only bag that looks like a messenger bag off a bike but still functions as a bike handlebar bag. It's rectangular in shape, with a top flap that falls down the front of the pocket, and an interior cinch closure, similar to a shoulder bag you might see someone wearing. This is an expensive bag, but it has no rivals in the thoughtful features of cycling. It is made of strong and waterproof Ecopak EPLX400 fabric, a recycled nylon material designed for canvas fabrics.

This bag has a capacity of 7.5 liters, which is large enough to fit a Yorkshire terrier or other small dog breed—in fact, it's the only bag we tested that felt sturdy enough to confidently carry a furry friend on bike racks. We were able to fit a full 3 liter case of wine in this bag, along with a warm jacket, snacks, tools, and a book. Even though the Catalyst is quite large, it is small enough to fit into any set of handlebars and is surprisingly light. The elasticated hood works well for quickly tucking the jacket underneath while riding, too.

And it's good

Ortlieb Ultimate Six Urban Handlebar Bag 20220728 143414 full

This high-tech quick-install quick-release bag is made of completely waterproof Cordura nylon, coated with polyurethane and offers easy access on the bike. It doesn't come with a mounting handle, either—that'll cost you at least another $30.

The Ortlieb Ultimate Urban handle bag looks like an incredibly fashionable lunch box, but this lunch box is easy to use while on your bike, and the 5 liter capacity can hold a lot. We easily fit a six-pack of cans in this bag, with room for a few sandwiches to round out the picnic.

The lid uses a magnetic closure and turns open away from the passenger, so that it does not sit between you and the opening of the bag, which faces the passenger; as a result, you can open the lid with one hand while on your bike and dig around inside. (This is the only bag we felt confident enough to do that with.)

It also has a clear touchscreen-compatible pocket on top of the lid to keep your phone in view at all times—handy if you use your phone for maps. Note that you have to purchase the mounting system for this bag separately (starting at $30), but it offers many mounting options for different rider needs and different types of bikes, including e-bikes.

And it's good

Rapha Bar Bag 20220728 144654 full

This small, tightly constructed polyester-bonded bag can keep you light while carrying your essentials.

The Rapha Bar Bag is a surprisingly well-built lightweight bag. Everything about this bag screams great craftsmanship—from the beautiful design that's obvious when you look closely at the interior lining to the way the straps are tied on the outside of the bag. The durable nylon material coated with polyurethane keeps it from snagging on your bars, which is unusual for small handle bags.

The main compartment remains accessible especially when the bag is on the bike, thanks to the easy-to-use zipper on any bag we tested. The bag has two internal mesh pockets for small items and a second, external zippered pocket for anything you want to separate during the ride. This bag is large enough to fit the necessities—a light jacket, a multitool, a tube, and a bar or two—so it's best suited for recreational riding or fair-weather commuting.
