All-New 2025 Toyota 4Runner Debuts Turbo Power and Off-Road Upgrades

2025 Toyota 4Runner Group 01

After 15 amazing years, the popular Toyota 4Runner is getting a complete overhaul for the 2025 model year. Ditching the standard V6 engine, the new 4Runner embraces the modern era with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine option and an all-new platform, while holding on to its off-road heritage.

Turbo Power takes the wheel

The biggest change for off-roaders is the reliable V6. The 2025 4Runner comes standard with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine called i-FORCE, which produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This may sting some V6 purists, but Toyota assures enthusiastic drivers that turbo power delivers a responsive and efficient driving experience.

For those who desire more muscle, a hybrid option – FORCE MAX – is available. This powertrain pairs a turbo engine with a 48-hp electric motor, bringing the total to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. That extra grunt should make winning ways a breeze. Both powertrains are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

A New Platform for Advanced Energy

The 2025 4Runner moves to the TNGA-F platform, the same underpinnings that underpin the Tacoma and Tundra trucks. This change promises better handling and stability on the road, as well as an expected increase in towing capacity (exact figures are yet to be revealed). More importantly for off-road enthusiasts, the new platform paves the way for future developments in capabilities.

Most trims come with a 14-inch central display, including the TRD Pro shown here.

Common Shortcuts Get a Power Boost

The main trims of the 4Runner lineup are all there for the 2025, but with significant power upgrades. Here's a quick look at what each option offers:

  • SR5: The base trim gets the standard i-FORCE engine, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver assistance system.
  • TRD Sport: This trim adds a sportier suspension, unique wheels, and a hood scoop for a more aggressive look.
  • TRD Sport Premium: This trim combines the power of the TRD Sport with comfort ups such as a sunroof, heated seats, and a premium sound system.
  • TRD Off-Road: This is where things get interesting for off-road enthusiasts. The TRD Off-Road boasts features such as terrain selection, a locking rear differential, and skid plates to handle rough terrain with confidence.
  • TRD Off-Road Premium: All the goodies from TRD Off-Road, plus extra creature comforts for driver and passenger – like the TRD Sport Premium above.
  • There is a limit: For those who like their off-roading in a classy way, the Limited trim has leather seats, a panoramic moonroof, and a premium sound system. The Limited trim can also be equipped with the i-FORCE MAX engine for even more power.

New Decisions Join the Adventure

The 2025 4Runner receives two new modifications to the lineup:

  • Platinum: The new top-of-the-line trim comes with heated rear seats, rain-sensitive wipers, a head-up display and a standard tow package. It is powered by the i-FORCE MAX engine, which provides both luxury and muscle.
  • TRD Pro: The classic off-road king of the 4Runner lineup lives on in the 6th generation. The TRD Pro comes equipped with goodies like FOX shocks, nearly two inches of extra ground clearance, skid plates, a roof rack, and extra off-road lights to tackle the most dangerous trails. The i-FORCE MAX engine is standard here.
  • Trail Hunter: Like the Platinum, this is a new offering in the 4Runner lineup. Like its Tacoma sibling, the 4Runner Trailhunter is designed to be a turnkey setup, complete with standard 33-inch tires and ARB's Old Man Emu shock absorbers, along with all the upgrades available in the TRD Pro.
