Black Rhino Wheels Review

Black Rhino Intro Tacoma

High quality Midnight Blue 16″ and 17″ wheels for Toyota Tacoma

Wheels are probably one of the sharpest ways to customize your truck. Shape, color and appearance have a major impact on overall appearance and performance.

With so many brands to choose from, you may have heard of Black Rhino. Dedicated to providing high quality and diverse options, they are the top names in the industry. They also donate a portion of their sales to Rhino conservation efforts to save the beautiful animal from extinction… how cool is that?

Today, we're going to take a closer look at one of their newest wheels, the Shogun! With inspiration from modern street cars, this wheel has an off-road touch that I think suits the Tacoma perfectly.

This bolt pattern will fit several Toyota & Lexus trucks. Check your eligibility.

Mounting & Balancing

Black Rhino Wheel Unboxing

As expected, there were no problems mounting and balancing this in my truck. Since I had a lot of tread left on my RBP Repulsor MT RX tires, I decided to transfer them to my previous wheel setup. The powder coat survived the tire machine unscathed. I got the 5th tire as a spare that was installed in the stock under bed area, and even though I have a 285/75/16 M/T tire, I had no problems fitting it.

So far, so good! 2000 miles and counting without vibration or problems.

First Thoughts

Black Rhino Shogun Midnight Blue 16x8

The Shogun wheel is Black Rhino's newest addition to the Flow Formed family. What is the Flow Form you ask?

According to Black Rhino:

The tire rim is made with high pressure and the tire is spun at high speed. This changes the molecular structure and improves the strength of the alloy.

Basically, it's a way to produce a tire that's lighter and stronger than a variety of inexpensive casters like most OEM tires. They are mid-range if you don't want to shell out the money for fully assembled wheels (they are lighter and more expensive).

I've been really digging the style of these wheels; A deep bowl, a few spokes, and a big lip all make for an aggressive and modern look that has become popular on Tacomas.

These tires have never let me down once, from long trips on pavement and dirt to hard hits (both intentional and unintentional). They did great and I don't see that changing anytime soon!

Design & Aesthetics

The Shogun, as mentioned before, is a unique modern road-like design that is becoming very popular on the scene. Since there are only a few companies producing the 6-spoke wheel, it really stands out compared to the traditional “rugged and tough” look. The simple and practical style that this Tacoma offers makes me wonder why I never tried something similar before.

My Top Features

Midnight Blue Wheels For Toyota Tacoma

I'm sure you're wondering why I chose this tire and why you should too. Maybe it was the color and style? Maybe it was what it was? Well, yes to all of them, BUT there are a few key features that won me over.

Available in 16″ Size

16" Midnight Blue Wheels From Black Rhino Flow Form Line

While this may be a hotly debated topic in the Tacoma world, I like this wheel because it is offered in a 16″ diameter. The Tacoma (TRD Offroad) stock wheels are 16″ and I wanted to stay with that size. In addition, with a 16″ wheel, you get a side wall for the tires. On my truck, I use a 285 (33″) tire and there is a noticeable difference between the 16″ and 17″ tires. More sidewall means more room to play when out on wheels!

The best part about the Shogun is that you are not limited to 16″ either, as it is offered in 17″ as well.

Negative Offset

Negative offset, if you don't know, is when the hub of the tire is set back from the rim. This adds more “poke” to the wheel, making it stick farther away from your car. Tacoma enthusiasts (and most trucks) love that negative displacement as it gives the truck an aggressive look. It can also help your tires to remove UCA.

Shogun comes with many negative and positive options allowing you to choose what you like best. At 16″, they offer -10mm offset which is an incredibly difficult combination to find in the Tacoma bolt pattern (without adding a spacer).

Color, Weight & Price

Color: Black Rhino offers these in several colors:

  • Matte Black
  • Silver
  • Midnight Blue

I fell in love with midnight blue because of its uniqueness. In the shade, it looks dark but in the sunlight, it shines like no other. This is a true bedroom color that I think really compliments my white truck.

Weight: Weight is a common problem with tires, as adding a few pounds of unsprung weight can start to add up. I was pleased to see that this wheel in the 16″ size weighs 21 LBS each. Compared to the last type I used (Method) which weighed 27 LBS each, this is super light. Between the five wheels, I lost a total of 30 LBS!

Amount: At $236 per tire, these compete with other high-end tire brands for affordability. Five wheels come to $1,180 which is a price that is hard to beat!

Final thoughts

Black Rhino Shogun Midnight Blue On White Tacoma Overland Build

As I'm sure you can tell, I'm pretty stoked to run this setup. Black Rhino knocked it out of the park with these wheels and I couldn't be happier with them. For all the reasons mentioned above, I think they are a great option for those who want to add modern style and functionality to their design!

I'm excited to continue to recap and take photos, so be sure to check out the great content.

Fun Ways!
