With it a new two-row car, Mazda is targeting a new type of customer: Someone who doesn't need or want a third row. Always. The 2025 Mazda CX-70 hits the luxury segment with two open rows, an available plug-in hybrid powertrain, smart storage solutions and posh styling. It is built on a major platform as the CX-90the CX-70 is similar – but different.

CX-90 vs. CX-70

From the side profile, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 look similar with the same swoopy lines and long hood line. But as a two-row SUV, the CX-70 looks like a sportier, and you can see it in black on the grille and vents under the headlights.

The CX-70 also gets what Mazda calls a “sub-trunk,” which is a fancy way of saying lower storage. It also gets a new special color: Melting Copper.

As a new car from Mazda, it also gets a few technology features that you won't see in the CX-90, and that includes built-in Alexa, a new trailer hitch view and driverless driver technology that will make the car reach. stops when the car detects that the driver is not responding.

Interestingly, the price of the CX-70 and CX-90 will be the same. The CX-70 drops the base Select trim, then jumps to the Turbo Preferred, with a starting price of $40,445, excluding an additional $1,455 destination. While the CX-90 Select starts at $37,845, the CX-90 Turbo Preferred also starts. today we are at 40,445 $. Other configurations and pricing are the same.

PHEV vs. gas models

Like the CX-90, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 comes with three options: Turbo, PHEV and Turbo S. Both turbos use a 3.3-liter inline-6, and the plug -in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) uses a 17.8 kW battery combined with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Power delivery and fuel economy for each option are as follows:

  • Turbo: 280 HP, 332 lb-ft, 25 MPG combined (regular fuel recommended)
  • PHEV: 323 HP, 369 lb-ft, 26 miles all-electric, 56 MPGE (premium fuel recommended)
  • Turbo S: 340 HP, 369 lb-ft, 25 MPG combined (premium fuel recommended)

Interestingly, apart from the “PHEV” or “Inline 6” badge on the side of the vehicles, there is only one indicator that shows the difference between the PHEV and the gas model: the ignition. The PHEV will have matte black plastic cladding around the wheel wells, and the gas models will have body colored cladding. That's all.

2025 Mazda CX-70 driving experience

Driving programs are always really short, but Mazda has done a great job of giving us a mix of driving conditions from highways to twisty palms to show off the sporty nature of the 2025 Mazda CX-70. Since the base Turbo isn't available until the fall, we've only had access to the PHEV and Turbo S powertrains, and both are really good.

For the PHEV part of the drive, I was mostly on suburban roads and flat highways. I was able to use electric-only mode for a good portion of my drive, and as you'd expect, it's smooth, fast and quiet. Once you're in the electric range, the engine kicks in and the car runs like a normal hybrid. It still has better power, but I will say that the 2.5 liter engine is loud.

With the Turbo S drive part, I had the opportunity to drive in Palm to Pines Scenic Byway, with 10 kilometers of spectacular twists and turns as you climb up the mountain. I was skeptical that a car the size of the CX-70 would do well, but it did. It handled the corners well, and I was able to push through some of the bends at a faster clip than I expected. In fact, the CX-70 handled so well, I held a line of other cars that didn't have the same handling chops.

But even that didn't dampen my excitement. Whether you're sporting power or traveling at a comfortable clip, the CX-70 is capable.

Good stuff

This is where I give full disclosure that I am a Mazda fan girl. I've really liked all the cars this company has produced, except for the Mazda6 a few generations ago. So, getting behind the wheel of the 2025 Mazda CX-70, I expected a lot of good things. And I got it.

From fit and finish to materials, this is a well thought out and well put together car. While I'm a fan of the caramel color interior with suede seats and dash inserts, the rest of the interior has well-stitched seats and door handles. I love both the aluminum trim pieces on the red and black interiors and the wood trim on the caramel. From styling to aesthetics, you'd be hard-pressed to find a luxury automaker that does a better job than Mazda.

In an era where everything is focused on the screen view, I was glad to see the CX-70 has real buttons and knobs for the HVAC and audio controls. Of course, that means you still have a dial adjustment instead of a touchscreen for infotainment controls, but that can be good or bad depending on how you see it. For me, it wasn't good and it wasn't bad – it's just something you have to get used to. The good news: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use touchscreen capability. A native infotainment system just doesn't do that.

I also like the sub-trunk on the CX-70. Living in the city, I like the ability to hide my things from prying eyes. Although the bottom storage compartment doesn't offer oodles of space, you can fit small gear underneath, such as paddleball rackets and balls or water bottles. There's one long cubby just behind the second-row seats, and I'll be honest, my first thought was: That space would be perfect for a hunting rifle.

Finally, I really liked the 12-speaker Bose premium sound system in the top trim we drove. Mazda included a USB key with test music, and the clarity and quality of the speakers, to my untrained ears, was impressive. I turned up the volume and didn't hear any distortion, and on one Norah Jones song, I could hear her breathing between verses.

Bad things

As a fan girl, I try to look for the worst in Mazda cars, and aside from the infotainment system dial, I could only find two things that bothered me.

The first one will come as no surprise to anyone who has read my reviews before. Wireless charging in the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is problematic. In addition to heating up your phone to get a red exclamation point on the infotainment screen to indicate that your phone has stopped charging, the charger itself doesn't hold your phone well. So, with every turn or bump in the road, your phone slides off the charging pad and stops charging. It's annoying. I'm a firm believer that if a car manufacturer can make wireless charging work, they shouldn't waste the money to put it in a car.

Another thing I didn't like about the CX-70 were the front cup holders. They had two prongs to help hold your drink, enough for a cup of coffee or a Yeti. But it wasn't strong enough to hold onto a small water bottle or soda can. If there was an extra prong, that would solve the problem.

An important point

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 isn't a much different car than the CX-90, so if you're expecting crazy changes, you'll be disappointed. But I think the CX-70 sounds simple and you're someone who doesn't have kids and never carries passengers, a two-row SUV is just the right size for someone like me. Cargo space is good, and the sub trunk is a great addition.

Overall, I think the CX-70 is a great SUV, fun to drive and well made.
