Why This May Be The Most Flexible Program On The Market!

If you're looking for one of the most durable and lightweight toppers on the market, look no further than Go Fast Campers (GFC). After three years as a Platform Camper, I switched to Platform Topper. Read my post – GFC Camper vs. Topper. Although I liked the former, I wanted to change my setup to something more flexible.

We're going on fewer big camping trips than we used to, so the Platform Topper is perfect for our daily driver. It can still carry all our gear and work as a great camping system. After one year, I still absolutely love mine and have customized it with enhancements that add to its already amazing performance.

In this article, I'll provide an in-depth, one-year review of this wonderful platform (pun intended).

Who is the GFC?

Before we delve into the details, let's go back – who is the GFC? Their motto is “Cozy, Fast, Reliable” and after handling their products for more than four years, I can say that they fully embody those words.

Their products are designed and manufactured in Bozeman, Montana, USA by skilled workers who prioritize quality and customer service. They are making big strides in manufacturing in the US where automation is key and robots are taking out certain parts.

When you buy a GFC, you are buying the most “accessible” camper or roof tent available. From trips to Home Depot to exhausting miles of washboard trails, I have never found their product to let me down.

Revolutionizing Accessories

Their products are designed to change the way you use your truck and turn it into a jack-of-all-trades adventure machine. They combine comfort and durability with a lightweight design and are also compatible with a wide range of truck models.

How to Order

GFC has a lead time of about 8-12 weeks (may be longer as they are doing a huge auction at the time we publish this).

You get to choose the color of the powder coated panels and the option to add a front or rear window and cross bars. You can pick up your order and have it delivered to their headquarters in Bozeman, Montana (for an additional fee).

Alternatively, you can drop it off at one of their eight convenient refill locations (again for a fee depending on location). On the GFC product pages, you can see live lead times for each fulfillment center.

Features & Specifications

Let's look at three important categories here.

Building

GFC Topper Camping Setup With BamBeds & Auxiliary Power

The GFC uses a proprietary aluminum extrusion with billet aluminum joints and mounting feet. The frame of the building is made of round aluminum tubes joined together to form a triangular frame. This distributes the load evenly around your truck bed.

I had no problems with anything moving or loosening even on the washboard ways. There are people who send it in full with their GFCs without hesitation.

On the sides and back, aluminum panels tilt to open and provide full access to the bed in the popular “cabana mode”. The panels have a dense, textured powder coat in your choice of color.

I've taken the truck hard and even though my green paint has some anti-pig scratches, the powder coat finish has held up very well.

The roof is a flexible honeycomb composite that allows soft ambient light inside. We've camped high up on several trips now, and the roof lets in perfect light in the morning.

Flexibility

The top has accessory mounting rails on all sides that I used to mount their Beef Rack bars and handles. Inside, there are internal mounting points that I used to add D-rings to attach a cargo net to hold our camping gear.

Weight

The topper has a class-leading weight of 135 kilograms. This dominates the strength-to-weight ratio compared to traditional fiberglass camper shells. It also fits close to the roofline of the cab. Due to the impressive weight and compact form, I didn't notice any impacts on fuel economy or wind noise.

My gas mileage really improved when I changed campsites. In addition, I can also easily access residential parking garages in the city. With my camper, I couldn't stay in garages.

It can support up to 800 lbs. of dynamic load and thousands of pounds of static load with its roof rack system. The GFC claims it can support more weight than a real bed. And they back it up by putting an old Ford truck in it…

1 year review

GFC Topper Review

After using the GFC Platform Topper for one year, I can confidently say that I love it as much on day 365 as day 1. In fact, I love it even more.

I spent the last year dialing in the setup and it was the best yet. Eight years ago, I have had many iterations of bed setups – from bare bed and everything in between. The topper stands out as my favorite because of its lightweight versatility.

Great customization

My major upgrades and customizations included GFC cow rack poles, Matt Gecko red/white LED lights, BamBeds platforms and slides, and a RockyMounts GuideRail bike rack.

Each of these accessories compliments the Topper perfectly and allows me to get to the mountains in no time. Not only that, but I can still run to the hardware store and use my Tacoma as a truck. Going from a dialed-in camp setup to a completely empty bed in minutes has been invaluable.

Konrad wrote a post about the right accessories to put in his camper. See – Best GFC Camper Accessories.

So far, nothing needs to be fixed or repaired. One thing I have noticed is that in very cold climates, the gas struts don't work as well as they do in hot temperatures. However, they still work well.

There are also several places where water enters the bed during heavy rains. I can't knock the GFC for that although that will happen with any bed setup (due to the Tacoma bed design). There are aftermarket seals and butyl tape you can use to help solve this if it bothers you but a drop or two here or there has never bothered me.

From daily highway driving to outdoor adventures, the Platform Topper has been rock solid, and the GFC's signature billet mounting feet haven't loosened at all. You can find plenty of videos online of fiberglass camper shells failing catastrophically and flying off-road into trucks. I am confident that I can break my truck in many ways before I can damage anything while driving.

Final thoughts

Of course, I remember the large size of my GFC camper bed. However, I am more in love with the topper every day. Whether I'm mountain biking, snowboarding, camping, or at Home Depot, I know this system is up to the task and will keep all my gear safe.

When I fine tune it and adjust it to my needs, it becomes my favorite truck upgrade. After a year of using it, I feel like I haven't broken it. It may even outlive the trusty truck it's tied to. Looking forward to the next trip around the corner!
