The new Quartermaster pickup truck is the latest addition to the Ineos Grenadier 4×4 gravel line, which includes Station Wagon, Utility Cart, and Commercial models. It is the first pick-up from Ineos and has been designed as a practical and highly capable off-roader from the ground up.

The front design is the same as the rest of the Grenadier range up to the B-pillar, with a 305mm longer wheelbase to accommodate the truck bed and extend the car to 5,440mm in length. It also features BMW-sourced straight-six petrol and diesel engines, and is supported by a rugged structure with a ladder frame chassis, heavy-duty suspension, solid beam axles, permanent four-wheel drive, and ball-rotating steering. system.

Three trim levels are available: the entry-level Quartermaster gets steel wheels, a central locking differential, a lower-level transfer case, lower skid plates, LED headlights, an off-road navigation system, and a full-size spare. the wheel. Step up to the Trailmaster Edition, and a host of off-road components are added, including front and rear locking diffs, all-terrain tires, and a raised air intake. Refreshingly, the interior features more physical buttons spread across the roof and dashboard, giving it a more analogue feel. Everything is easy to operate, and while the switches look solid, they are light to the touch, making them feel fragile. Everything is logically placed, with the climate and radio controls in the center stack where you'd expect them to be. While all off-road mode functions are on the roof panel, this panel also houses the front-wired switches for aftermarket accessories like the roof-mounted light bar.

There's a large 12.3-inch touchscreen on top of the dashboard and a smaller screen behind the steering wheel, but this is for the headlights rather than a conventional instrument cluster. A little annoying is the location of the speedometer, which is displayed in the selected part of the display, which makes it difficult to look at it while driving. The remaining screen is used to display all other functions, including navigation and off-road driving data.

Interior space is decent, with a long roofline offering plenty of headroom for front and rear passengers. The sporty Recaro seats provide a great driving position, are very comfortable and supportive, and do a good job of holding you in place when off-road. It's a different story at the rear, with narrower legs and a more upright seating position, making the rear more suitable for short trips.

The cabin materials in our Trailmaster Edition test car were a mix of hard-wearing plastics and soft materials that are dirt-resistant and easy to clean. It's well-specified with climate control, DAB radio, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. There's also a soft toot horn on the steering wheel that alerts cyclists and pedestrians when you're approaching them, as well as a compass and altimeter. There's also an array of useful storage dotted around the interior, including two good-sized cup holders and a lockable storage bin that houses both USB-A and USB-C sockets.

The Quartermaster is available with a powerful 3.0 liter straight-six engine available from BMW. The 286hp turbocharged petrol engine produces 450Nm of torque, while the twin-turbocharged diesel produces 249hp and 550Nm of torque. The petrol can go from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds, while the diesel is slower. Both engines are capable of hitting a top speed of 99mph.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard, sending power to permanent four-wheel drive, which is paired with a low-speed manual gearbox and a center locking differential. Opting for the Trailmaster Edition adds front and rear locking options, which can also be specified in the options list on some trim levels.

Our Trailmaster Edition test car was equipped with a diesel engine, which Ineos says has been reworked from the Grenadier line-up so that 80-90% of peak torque is available across the powerband at all times. Get it up to speed, and this engine delivers a rather earth-shattering performance. In normal driving, the gearbox moves smoothly as it changes gear almost imperceptibly, ensuring that plenty of pulling power is available whenever you need it.

The Quartermaster's steering takes some getting used to, as its setup is more focused on off-road use than on tarmac, requiring about four turns from lock to lock. When fully locked, it has a turning circle of 14.5m, a meter more than the Grenadier Utility wagon. The most important difference to 'normal' steering is that it doesn't take you into account, so we found that normal inputs were needed on the road, especially when turning corners.

Refinement on the go is easy, with a reinforced setting that can smooth out small bumps. However, it crashes due to the imperfections of the highways, making their presence felt in the cabin. Body roll is well controlled in bends, and once you've got a good grip on the steering wheel, the Quartermaster feels competent on the road with its permanent four-wheel drive and its considerable weight, giving it decent grip and stability.

Off road is where the Quartermaster really starts to shine. The opening section of our off-road course consisted of gravel and grass tracks, where the optional BF Goodrich A/T KO2 tires were formidable, providing solid traction throughout. When the trails got rough and the gravel turned into boulders, using the low-range ratio and center differential was straightforward using a couple of lever shifts mounted on the center console. Once they are engaged, the Quartermaster jumps over anything in his path with ease.

However, in the tight and steep terrain, we had to disengage the front and rear locking diffs using switches mounted on the roof. This was easy enough to open after a few tries, and, once again, the truck continued on many rocky slopes without concern. Longer landing and takeoff angles and higher ground clearance probably helped, ensuring we made it through without backsliding on the ground below.

There are no engines available from BMW that are more economical. The petrol is very dry, able to get up to 19.6mpg, while the diesel gets up to 25.9mpg. During our time with the diesel, and after a mix of tarred country roads and off-road trails, we managed a paltry 19.4mpg. However, careful driving will probably get you closer to the official figure.

Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster: Loading and towing

The Quartermaster's loading bed is large enough to carry a Euro pallet – minus the spare tire – measuring 1,564mm in length, 1,619mm in width, and 485mm in height. Other practical features include four bed tie-down rings, a 400w power supply for power tools, and an integrated mounting bar. The rear tailgate is 1,280mm wide and can hold up to 225kg when open.

Maximum fuel capacity is 835kg, and the base diesel 760kg – figures that lag well behind rivals such as the Volkswagen Amarok, which can carry up to 1,190kg. For towing, both engines are rated to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 3,500kg.

Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster: Decision

The Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster is proof that there is a place in this world for exceptional off-road pickups. It's a great example that boasts a lot of stone capabilities and offers a decent amount of loading space and capacity for most use cases. The rugged design stands out on the road, and its luxurious, eye-catching cabin is superbly detailed.

It is less convoluted compared to competitors like Ford Ranger and the Amarok. All of its competitors offer a higher load capacity and will be easier to live with on the road, but the Quartermaster has a unique advantage when it comes to off-road capabilities. Its on-road prowess is slightly degraded, but it still performs impressively in almost every important terrain, offering a wealth of versatility as a work truck.

As a Utility Cart, it is difficult to recommend the Quartermaster directly, especially to a commercial user who is willing to recoup a portion of the VAT on their purchases. Its suitability depends entirely on your equipment, but if you fit its small space, there is nothing better.
