Is the Mitsubishi Delica PHEV on its way to the US?

mitsubishi lineup teaser delica phev

This week, Mitsubishi Motors announced its five-year plan called “Momentum 2023” for the North American market, and it includes two new vehicles, which will enter segments where the company does not currently compete. Judging by the image of the hero released in the press, it looks remarkably like the D:X concept that was revealed at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. Does this mean that the Mitsubishi Delica PHEV is on its way Stateside?

What is the Mitsubishi D:X Concept?

According to Mitsubishi, the D:X concept should clarify the future of the Delica, which is a small car or multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) sold in other parts of the world. The concept debuted with the Mitsubishi Triton pickup prototype, which is now a production model outside the US So, does this mean the D:X concept is headed for production, too? TBD, but the hero image of the 5-year plan, too, seems to support the idea.

So, what exactly is the D:X Concept? An MPV that uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain (think Outlander PHEV). It has Mitsubishi's Super-All-Wheel-Control (S-AWC) system for all-weather and off-road conditions. It is equipped with skid plates, solid fenders, large tires and bright copper exterior paint.

Other than that, we have pictures but no real details.

Mitsubishi Delica PHEV?

If you look at the Delica's 55-plus year history, you see it built for “serious outdoor activities” and everyday use. It is built with a body frame and four-wheel drive. In fact, the Delica D:5 served as a support car in the 2007 Paris-Dakar Rally and the 2023 Asia Cross Country Rally.

According to the story of Automotive News, it is already a deal that the sports passenger van will come to the US But it is not clear how much it will be like the concept from 2023. But the Momentum 2030 plan supports the idea of a plug-in hybrid as the plan's goal to create a “pathway to electrification.”

The plan indicates that a new or completely redesigned vehicle will be unveiled in the North American market every year from 2026 to 2030. An Auto News article says a “strong lineup” of the Outlander crossover and a small PHEV crossover will hit the market ahead of a possible Mitsubishi. The Delica PHEV will arrive by the end of the decade.

An important point

Other than “minivans” and “electric,” we don't have much information about this car. But we hope it bears some resemblance to the bad-ass D:X Concept. What we know from the Momentum 2023 program: Mitsubishi is not giving up on the American market.

And we're still hoping the lineup could include a Triton-like cargo truck — if not quite the Triton.
