Oil sensor? 2025 Ram 1500 Hurricane no dipstick responses

There have been thousands of questions about the new 2025 Ram 1500 Hurricane and no dipstick video we have posted shows that the truck will rely on a sensor instead.

In case you missed the news, the Hurricane 3.0-liter inline 6 twin-turbocharged engine replaces the HEMI 5-7-liter V8 engine in all Ram 1500 trucks. There will be two models of the Hurricane with different horsepower and torque. Both engines don't have a dipstick and will instead rely on a sensor with a dash readout of oil life and oil levels.

I posted a list of top questions that viewers asked to be answered by developers. My questions are in bold and their answers are in italics:

Why the change to not have a dipstick?

The Hurricane is the top engine in the company's lineup. As such, the design team reviewed available technologies to not only improve performance, fuel economy, and engine performance but also customer usability. An oil level sensor allows oil level monitoring for customers who choose not to check their oil level regularly.

How does the sensor measure oil levels and oil life?

The oil level sensor is an ultrasonic style sensor specific to the T6 system.

The sensor also has a temperature sensing capability to compensate for volume changes due to oil temperature.

The sensor cannot measure oil life. An algorithm that uses several engine/vehicle performance metrics is used to calculate oil life. Similar algorithms have been used in other engine applications.

Will the sensor detect things like antifreeze in the oil from a cracked head gasket?

No, the oil level sensor has the ability to measure level and temperature only.

Where is the sensor located?

The sensor is mounted vertically on the bottom of the oil pan.

What happens if the sensor stops working? (can you drive a truck?)

The car can be driven, but error messages will be displayed in the cluster associated with the specific reason for the loss of function.

An additional note that may be useful on the topic:
Owners can check their oil in the form of Oil Level Renewal Procedure which can be found in the owner's manual (see section below). This can be done from the comfort of home without leaving the car.
