The cheap 2024 Chevy Colorado Desert Boss is making a comeback

Remember the Chevy Colorado Desert Boss? Probably not since it didn't produce. Now its version is like a comeback.

The Chevy Colorado Desert Boss was unveiled on July 28, 2022, as part of an all-new midsize truck lineup. Since then, it has not been mentioned.

What was the Chevy Colorado Desert Boss?

Desert Boss was a package added to the Chevy Colorado ZR2.

It included:

  • 17 inch wheels with beadlock capability
  • Off-road bumper and front fascia
  • Sports Bar with Sail Panel
  • Ceiling mounted light bar
  • The bottom camera
  • “Desert Boss” unique songs and dark characters.

This package was aimed at true desert racers who needed more and more power than the ZR2.

As soon as the photos were announced and shared, it seems to have disappeared and you won't find it for sale or on

Shad Balch, Director of Chevrolet Communications, said in an email that Chevrolet will build and sell the Desert Boss for the 2023 model year. The Buffalo replaced it for the 2024 model year, and now the automaker is bringing back the Desert Boss as a dealer accessory.

Isn't the Chevy Colorado Bison the Desert Boss?

When the 2023 Chevy Colorado was announced, the Bison package was the only one missing from the action.

This package was available on the previous generation Colorado, and uses various components from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). They are a well known aftermarket conversion company.

With Boron-steel skid plates, real steel bumpers, and 35” off-road tires, it is the alpha male of the Colorado lineup.

Admittedly, you have to pay more for those things with the $11,000 package charge.

Desert Boss as a merchant add-on

In 2024, the Desert Boss is completely out of the picture.

According to the story in GMAuthority.comdealers will be able to build you a Desert Boss with parts directly from GM.

You can add this package to the ZR2 and the cheaper Trail Boss trim.

The package includes these parts and their part numbers:

  • Off-road front bumper with safari bar (LPO VH6)
  • Off-road bumper pod lights (LPO 5BO)
  • 30 inch road mounted grille light bar (LPO S3W)
  • Off-Road Bumper Light Wiring Harness (LPO WRT)
  • Accessory replacement kit (UJA)
  • Auxiliary power distribution box (SAB)
  • Performance Skid Plate (LPO PZZ) (Trail Boss only)

Notably, however, you can't order a ZR2 Bison and add on these features.

Pricing is not yet available for this package, but expect it to be in the thousands.

An important point

While we'll never know why the Bison package wasn't announced when the 2023 Chevy Colorado was launched, it's nice to see another package offered. This is great to see this package offered on a lower trim level and cheaper model like the Trail Boss. Considering many midsize off-road trucks are starting to hit and pass the $60,000 mark, like the Tacoma Trailhunter and Tacoma TRD PRO, cheap is a relief.
